Creating the Sea Wolves brand with former GM Stéphan Boutin

BILOXI, MS - In 1995, the Mississippi Coast Coliseum looked to repeat the successes of the Louisiana Icegators, Mobile Mysticks and several of the other ECHL teams along the I-10 corridor, and they sought a team to occupy the Coliseum.

They found Jean Gagnon, who was the owner of the Mississippi Sea Wolves for the first six seasons. Gagnon was noted to have spoken to the owner of the Arkansas Riverblades, and 48 hours later he had a lease with the Coliseum for an ECHL franchise in Biloxi.

The franchise held a “name the team” contest and the coast anticipated for months what the name of Biloxi’s new pro team would be called. 

On July 1st, 1996 the franchise held a press conference where they announced the name of the team would be the Mississippi Sea Wolves.

We spoke to the first General Manager of the Mississippi Sea Wolves Stéphan Boutin to get his insight on the process of creating the Sea Wolves brand.

NHL Enterprises, INC helped the Sea Wolves organization create a logo for the team.

“We gave them a list and with a few revisions the Sea Wolves logo was created,” Boutin said.

“When we unveiled the logo I did a TV open call type show, and people had a lot of colorful things to say about it but people seemed to love it”, Boutin added.

We asked him about what he thinks about hockey returning to Biloxi.

“I would love to see hockey back in Biloxi, Mississippi,” Boutin said.
